Additional Information about firewood
This is a brochure published by DPI Victoria giving the properties of some common species.
The following links to the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE) contain some useful information about firewood.

The Western Australian Government Sustainable Energy Development Office website also has some useful information on the running costs and greenhouse gas emissions for domestic heating options. Note however that the CO2 emission figures in the tables in this study do not take account of the fact that all of the CO2 that is released during burning firewood is re-absorbed by trees as they grow, provided the firewood was harvested from sustainably managed forests.
A report prepared by George Wilkenfeld and Associates for the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment in 2007 titled "Options to reduce greenhouse emissions from new homes in Victoria through the building approval process" has some useful cost comparisons between wood and other heating fuels (see Table 16 on page 53). It also highlights the greenhouse benefits of using firewood instead of fossil fuels such as gas and electricity from coal fired power stations (see page 51).
